The first success book I ever read was ‘Think & Grow Rich’ by the late-great Napoleon Hill, when I was 15 years old. It was recommended by my older brothers who had it recommended to them by their upline in a network marketing company.

While reading this book, I felt like I was peering into the hidden laws of the universe. How to bring the unseen into the seen, to bring my intense teenage desires into physical, glorious reality. At the time, it was girls and wellness…and stayed pretty much the same until my late teens  when it became girls and spirituality.

Reading that book led me UP a path of personal and spiritual development over the past 18 years, spending over $40,000 in books, home-study courses, seminars, and meditation retreats. During this time I came across extraordinary motivational, informational, and inspirational speakers, coaches, and businessmen.

Anthony Robbins. Brian Tracy. Donald Trump. Barbara Walters…and many others who were lessor known but just as empowering.

I have a lot of indirect history with Jeffrey (continue reading to learn more about that history) but in a nutshell, he is a master at transforming people’s lives and businesses through his books, CDs, courses, events and one-on-one coaching.

In 2007, my wife (at the time) and I were both employed in the timeshare business in Orlando. I believe timeshare to be one of the last true bastions of ‘true selling.’ Think about it. Where else in the world do you have the challenge of selling a 5, even 6-figure, product  in 90 minutes to someone who is not at all interested and is only sitting in front of you for a free breakfast and 2 amusement park passes valued at $85 for ONLY 45 minutes of his time?

Tough sell indeed.

Selling timeshare was a great time in my life…I learned about human psychology, asking qualifying and closing questions, dressing for success and painting a positive picture. Guess what I didn’t learn? Apparently, how to lie, deceive, double-talk, and play favorites with management. My timeshare selling career was on thin ice because of it. It offers some of the best sales training in the world along with some shadowy practices and characters, as I later found out.

Because of the unpredictable nature of the business, my wife was looking for additional opportunities to make money that  we could transition into and possibly use our active real estate licenses.

Enter Nouveau Riche University, stage left.

Without going into much detail. I got home from work one afternoon after selling my butt off and found my wife sitting in our office with a strange, older man dressed in a nice business suit. My first thought was, “Oh Lord, what is he pitching her and did she sign on the dotted line already? Ok, I’m sure we have at least 24-hours to cancel.”

The man sitting in our office was a very successful salesman, real estate investor, and father of five. And he was signing up my wife to sell real estate education for a commission. I wanted nothing to do with it. I remember saying, “How many different companies like this have we signed up for and not made any money with?” Her silence was answer enough.

But being the serial entrepreneur and lover-of-systems that I am, I began looking into the real estate education, pay-plan, and marketing system and immediately fell in love with it.

Every direct-sale or network marketing company has its rock-stars and top performers and Nouveau Riche University was no different. I began listening to their weekly conference calls. While each top performer had their own unique challenges and situations in building their business they all shared one thing in common…Jeffrey Combs.

“Who the heck is this Jeffrey Combs dude?”

One night, I was listening to another live call when the President of NRU introduced Jeffrey Combs on line. Within the first 2 minutes I knew this guy was different. I was in awe of his delivery, clarity and ability to cut to the heart of the matter.  A quote from him really stuck with me, “Sales is the world’s highest paid profession.” Being a self-proclaimed wordsmith, he spun old success cliches and adages into new, fresh and memorable lessons. He was a Top performer among top performers.

I was so inspired to action after that conference call, I immediately went outside and placed over 500 flyers promoting the NRU opportunity on cars at 10 o’clock at night.  I was on fire! That buzz lasted for over a week and I generated over 425 leads within 1-month after applying the knowledge he shared during that call.

I ordered most of Jeffrey Combs materials on lead generation, prospecting, closing, asking questions, qualifying, success mindset, removing procrastination…his material and delivery resonated so much with me and was unlike anything I had heard of before. I wanted more.

Enter ‘Breakthroughs to Success’ middle stage.

My wife and I had had the opportunity to visit Jeffrey Combs at his house in Stockton, CA for his weekend long event called Breakthroughs to Success. During this event, you would get to watch Jeffrey work and how he structures his day to create millionaire results. As ‘luck’ would have it, the last minute before buying our tickets, we BOTH lost our jobs. It was not a good day at the Long household.

We had enough money for ONLY one ticket. So who goes? Me or my wife? Who was more in need of a breakthrough? What happened next changed the direction of my life.

We went back and forth for a day, trying to encourage the other person to go but then I heard my wife subcommunicate that she really needed this, I made the internal shift and said, “Well, ok ok…you go and do this and come back with the clarity you’ve been seeking.” I definitely wanted to go but looking back, my inner drive wasn’t strong enough to make it happen.

She went. She had many breakthroughs. And she realized that our marriage wasn’t working.

Five-months later we were divorced and I moved from Orlando, FL to Butler, NJ outside of NYC.

It was the toughest time of my life emotionally, financially, and spiritually. I was emotionally crushed and devastated by what transpired over those 5-months. But that time of transition lead to the next four years of intense pranic healing work on myself and others,  direct training under the Pranic Healing Masters, attendance to dozens of meditation and healing retreats, a super supportive relationship and learning how to forgive myself and others. Jeffrey Combs was a major catalyst from a selfish life to a life of service.

I cannot thank him enough for freeing my ex-wife and I, from a marriage of misery, struggle, and obligation.

Bill Gates Answered Every One of My Questions

Ok Bill, let me ask this one more time.

I grew up as a teenager in Berlin, MA. There was an awesome church field a couple towns over where friends and I would meet to stare up at the stars and inevitably get philosophical. “Do you believe in God?” or “What do you think happens when we die?” or “Do you realize how long it would take to reach that star?” or “Dude, what’s its gonna be like when we’re old, like 30?” We would go ’round the circle from guy to guy, each one adding to or countering the answer of the previous man. Some would say it was a great form of mental masturbation because most of us simply enjoyed the inquiry itself rather than actually getting the answer to questions that have baffled mankind from time immemorial.

One of my favorite questions that seemed to get everyone heated up was, “Who is the number one person you would like to meet? Dead or alive?” I liked those questions because it told me where someone’s head. If the response was “Bill Parcels.” That was my friend obsessed with everything New England Patriots. “Britney Spears.” That was a friend who could not get enough of the music video, ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time.’ “Mother Teresa.” An occasional girl who valued service to humanity above all else. Me? My response has remained consistent for most of my life….Bill Gates. And the interesting thing is, beyond the fact that he’s one of the World’s Richest People, I don’t really know why I chose him.

I always fantasized what it would be like to sit across from Bill Gates at an independently-owned coffee shop. Which leads me to the third question among my friends, “If you had just one question to ask this person, what would it be?” So much pressure, I got Bill ‘Freakin’ Gates sitting across from me and I only have one question to ask him before he vanishes from my psyche like a genie going back into its Lamp after granting my third, and final wish. But in my fantasy, I don’t ask just one question.

I ask a series of causal yet thought provoking questions, where he keeps saying things like, “Hmm, never thought about it like that.” or “Wow, that’s a great question, you should come work for me.” or “Man, I’ve been trying to answer that one for most of my life.” Because really, how is one measly question going to matter? I’ve read books on the Art of Asking Questions, but even then I wouldn’t get more than a few paragraphs out of the man. In the end, he ends up answering each and every one of my questions.

Speaking of Bill Gates and asking questions, it reminds me of the ‘Lunch with Warren Buffet Auction.’ Once a year Warren Buffet has an auction where the winning bidder gets to have lunch with him and pick his brain with the proceeds going to charity. The winning bid for June 2013 was $1,000,100. Think about how well-thought out and even timed, each and every question would be for Warren Buffet. That guy wants to make that $1,000,100 investment count. My questions to Bill Gates would not have same ROI like the winning bidder whom is dining over a BBQ Burger and seasoned fries with Warren.

Being in his aura, or the aura of any successful person who has made a positive impact in the world, would be reward enough for me. It would make a great story for sure. “Did you feel the basic chakra on Bill spin? Holy moley, it was like being sucked into a wind turbine.” But other than donating $1M to charity, how else can one bask in the aura of a Multibillionaire Philanthropist? Who would you like to meet, dead or alive? And what burning question(s) would you like to ask? A Daily Routine Fit for a King (or the Wealthiest Person Who Ever Lived)

The same daily routine for over 60 years made John D Rockefeller Sr. the wealthiest person who ever lived.

As long as I can remember I have had a horrible daily routine. Some days I would sleep 14 hours and wake up feeling exhausted with a severe headache. Other days I’d be running on 6 hours of sleep and accomplish more in that day than in some weeks.

Eat times and amounts were always a hit or miss with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I would skip meals because of my work schedule or I would gorge at 11:30pm at night after a group meditation with friends. I ate processed foods because they were fast, cheap, and tasty never-mind the addictive qualities.

Exercising was a complete joke to me. God blessed me with the good genetics that kept my muscle mass high and fat mass low consistent throughout my entire life. I would workout in spurts, on and off for years. I was never consistent because my body worked great whether I worked it or not.

The term job dissatisfaction I think was actually coined by a friend who was helping me restructure my mess-of-a-resume. She became overwhelmed by the sheer volume and types of jobs I had over the past 15 years. I’ll bet you right now, you haven’t had anywhere near the amount of jobs I’ve had in my life.

Even my meditation practice, my only source of intense bliss and inner peace, was just an every other day or every three-day affair.

I saw sleep, nutrition, exercise, work and meditation as events rather than a process. If this time was the deepest sleep, most nutritious smoothie, most intense workout, biggest sale or most blissful meditation….I could slack off for awhile, take it easy, have more free time to do what I really wanted to do.

I credit a lot of my inconsistency with the type of work I chose in my mid-teens. The food and beverage industry. I became accustomed to working days, nights, weekends, holidays, doubles, fill-ins, early cuts and having those hours change from week to week. These schedules made it challenging of when and what to eat. If I had plans of going to bed early and waking up early, it was usually derailed by having to work late that night then opening the next morning. Even the very income itself was inconsistent, requiring picking up shifts to pay bills, unforeseen expenses, or saving for a yoga retreat. This pattern persisted into my early 30’s.

Then the shift occurred through the help of a girlfriend, a few books, removing sugar, and a change in mindset.

I began dating this amazing girl who found me working at yet another restaurant job. In the process of getting to know me and the experiences I have had in the worlds of business, public speaking and real estate investing, she made a very strong point, “You need to get the fuck out of the restaurant business; its sucking your life away, paying you dog-shit while you have all these gifts to share.” I quickly heeded her suggestion and haven’t looked back.

The three books that have transformed my daily routine were Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, who assisted me in recognizing the small things I did do everyday could be used as anchors to attach more empowering habits. I used this very method to greatly reduce sugar in my diet and increase the amount of fruit and nuts I ate.

Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller Sr. by Ron Chernow which to be honest I cheated a bit by using the cliff notes by Dane Maxwell from ‘The Foundation.’ I have no problem reading an 832 page book but if I can save some time I’m all about it. The biggest take away I got from Titan was that John D Rockefeller Sr. had the same schedule for over 60 years and was vigilant about protecting it. No one was allowed to impose their schedule or agenda onto his. It helped me realize that a simple, boring daily routine practice over time through rain, sleet, or shine could make someone the richest person in the world.

The last book, The UltraMind Solution by Mark Hyman put my mind at ease about my inconsistencies, stating poor biology rather than psychology or neurology could be the cause of my laziness, depression, inconsistencies, and overall poor daily routine. By changing my diet and adding appropriate supplementation, I became more consistent in every area of my life.

Which brings me to removing sugar from my diet. Well, not actually removing it but greatly reducing it to my morning coffee and the occasional piece of specialty chocolate. The need to reduce my intake of sugar was one of the greatest realizations of my life within the past 20 years. I had absolutely no clue as to how much it affected my sleep, hunger, energy level, work ethic, ability to concentrate, and emotional state. The details are in an article on my website called, How My Addiction to Sugar Almost Killed Me. In a nutshell, only by removing sugar for 6 weeks then reintroducing it into by diet could I see how much it was affecting my physical, emotional, and mental health.

Now the mindset shift was primed and ready. I was out of the restaurant business, the three books gave me the know-how to create a supportive daily routine, and sugar was no longer gripping my life. I made the mindset shift to, “I’m committed to living a supportive daily routine to help me live out my purpose of coaching and healing many people.”

Fast forward to present day. I wake up at 5:30am feeling rested and rejuvenated. Meditation, breakfast, and exercise begin at 5:45am. I spend 9:00am to 6:00pm writing articles, filming videos and coaching clients. Eat lunch from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Power nap from 2:00pm to 2:30pm.
Eat dinner at 6:30pm. Begin my nightly ritual of drinking tea, journaling, and reading at 9:00pm. Finally I’m off to the inner world of sleep and dreams by 10:00pm.

This is the basis of my daily routine with some slight modifications on Saturday and Sunday. But the whole point is to follow this routine consistently. The compound benefits of this routine are immense. My energy levels have never been higher or more sustainable. I accomplish more in a day than I use to in a week. I feel calm yet alert throughout the day. I accomplish the most important things earliest in the day. With each passing day on this routine, it becomes stronger and easier to live by. The daily routine actually drives me.

I coach my clients on developing a similar routine. The principles and reasons behind why it works are rock solid. It does require an overhaul of certain lifestyle practices but the payoff is not only immediate but the long-term benefits of greater health, inner peace, and clarity of mind are immeasurable. I came to the conclusion that these practices work, I got my life back. I felt in order to live my life’s purpose required a consistent daily routine. The key is daily.
